Global Awareness Day for MND
It is MND Awareness Day 21st June 2020. This is such an important month for people with Motor Neurone Disease as June is a month of global awareness for Motor Neurone Disease.
There are more than 400 people in Ireland living with this complex and cruel disease and they need our support this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
What is Motor Neurone Disease?
Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a progressive neurological condition that attacks the motor neurones, or nerves, in the brain and spinal cord. This means messages gradually stop reaching the muscles, which leads to weakness and wasting.
MND can affect how you walk, talk, eat, drink and breathe. However, not all symptoms necessarily happen to everyone and it is unlikely they will all develop at the same time, or in any specific order.
The cause of MND is not known. There may be environmental factors that trigger the damage in people who are susceptible to the disease.
Ongoing research is necessary to find out the nature of these environmental factors, and what makes one person more susceptible than another.
MND strikes people of all ages and currently there is no cure, however symptoms can be managed to help the person achieve the best possible quality of life.
The MNDA (Motor Neurone Disease Association) of Ireland provide fantastic support in many ways. There provide practical and emotional support for their clients. You will find a list of useful resources at the end of this blog.
Raising Awareness and Funds
Each year IMNDA help raise awareness and funds to help people suffering from MND. This year’s Drink Tea for MND is a very different but very exciting one. Although the country is under the cloud of Covid-19, IMND have adapted to these uncertain times.
With so many of us working and staying at home, our kettles have been in full demand. One thing certainly hasn’t changed during this time and that’s enjoying a well-deserved cup of tea. Despite social distancing, we can still be together.
The Drink Tea for MND campaign will help support the MND community and spread MND Awareness this month. We can support this on MND Awareness Day 21st June 2020 or a date before or after. It can be as elaborate or as simple as asking friends, family or work colleagues to support you by ‘purchasing’ tea, coffee or some delicious goodies from your Virtual Café Menu!
